“We arrived easily from Naples airport by train, skirting Mount Vesuvius to Salerno and then by bus to the small seaside resort of Maiori. There was an extremely pleasant walk on our first evening to the neighboring village of Minori via the lemon groves built for lemon transportation. The steep steps, which we would see a lot more of, made us think about the hardships of carrying baskets of lemons up and down the hillsides, mainly by women. As the sun set, the sweet aroma of the luscious and unique Amalfi lemons pervaded the air. We called in at a famous cake shop (Sal de Riso) and met Salvatore de Riso. We would see huge cardboard cutouts of this famous chef, later on in Naples! For me, one of the best walks of all: shorter, cool and so interesting to be introduced to lemon production.
The next day we climbed up to Ravello after a short easy bus ride to Amalfi. Everyone falls in love with Amalfi! Its history is so interesting, (a former Republic, home of the inventor of the compass, absolutely beautiful huge and distinctive lemons) and its setting is so beautiful….
